The New York Yankees have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran second baseman Neil Walker.
A Silver Slugger winner at second base in 2014, Walker is a career .272 hitter with 130 homers in parts of nine seasons with the Mets, Brewers and Pirates.
He had been working out at the camp for free agents in Bradenton, Florida, organized by the players’ association.
To make room for Walker on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated for assignment outfielder Jake Cave.
The Yankees also released infielder Danny Espinosa from his minor league contract.
But he’s played in just nine games all season. So nobody’s expecting imminent rescue by Leonard, even though his elite skill set suggests he probably could save San Antonio’s season.
I saw the reports that say he wants to come back Thursday, Parker said. So it’ll be 14 games left. It is what it is. We’ll try to do our best. I know everybody wants to keep fighting. There’s a lot of character on this team. If Kawhi comes back, hopefully he can help us. We know it’s not going to be easy. He didn’t play for like two months. It’s going to be a tough situation regardless, but we’ll try to do the best we can.
A two-season layoff following an August 2016 knee injury naturally depresses Bridgewater’s value. But in a best-case scenario, a team could acquire a quarterback who — after knocking the rust off — could start for 10 seasons or more. At the very least, Bridgewater will bring supreme professionalism and attitude to any role he receives. — Seifert
Teams don’t step out much for linebackers unless they are also pass-rushers, but Brown can make a big difference relative to what he is likely to be paid. He’s a tackling machine (512 in four seasons) who hasn’t missed a game in the NFL. — Seifert
Veteran running backs are usually bargains on the open market, considering their short shelf life. But whoever signs McKinnon will get a player who fits well into today’s incarnation of NFL running backs. He is equally fluent in the running and passing games, and offers value as a returner as well. — Seifert
If Fulmer is healthy, he could be as attractive a trade target as will exist on the in-season market, with the stuff to be a No. 2 or 3 in a contending rotation and four years of team control remaining. That combination should command a hefty price in another team’s prospects.
